| October Overview | 1998 Overview |
| Date/Time: | Saturday, October 31st, 8:00 am - 11:00 am |
| Location: | Guns to Ventura Rivermouth to Stables |
| Weather: | Sunny and warming, building westerly breezes. |
| Conditions: | Good, a little westerly breeze building when I paddled out but never amounted to much. Still windswell-influenced. |
| Swell: | Holding WNW swell, peaked overnight with the windswell dying off, AM buoys at 8-9 ft at 17 s. Inner buoys at 3-4 ft, 17 s. Much lower than forecasted 8 ft swells on the inner waters and 13 ft swells on the outer waters, by about half. |
| Surf: | Resultingly disappointing but still fun surf, chest to shoulder high with some head high sets. |

Missed it yesterday by checking the wrong spots; today
I woke up before dawn and the swell wasn't registering
enough on the buoys to make a 4 am go-out more worthwhile
than 2 more hours of sleep. The sleep was worth it.
Checked the Rincon and saw lots of people sitting and occasional waist high waves. Moved on to Stables, and this time decided on a whim to walk up past the rivermouth to Guns, a peak named after WWII anti-submarine gun emplacements still visible on the shoreline. Worked my way from there down through the shifty beachbreak peaks and to the more consistent and better lined up waves at Pipes and Stables, so the surf varied through the session from mushy and long rides at the end to short 1/10th second tube trips and attempts at high performance at the beginning. Got one solid overhead bomber across the Stables reef to quite a ways inside; that alone was enough for me to forget the lost hopes of better surf. A good fun surf with minimal hassles. |
