Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  December Overview 1999 Overview

Date/Time: Monday, December 27th, 7:30 am - 11:30 am
Location: Stables
Weather: Sunny with light offshores building to near-gales.
Conditions: Clean early, eventually turning bumpy with side-offshore chop from the beachbreaks down south.
Swell: New WNW groundswell, 8+ ft at 17 s from 290 deg.
Surf: Head high with sets to overhead and a half, even bigger down at C Street.
Comments: Checked Rincon on the way down, lots of people in the cove but waves looking pretty small. Didn't see a good set in the 15 minutes I watched it. Stables was setty as well, with 5-10 wave sets and long lulls. Difficult to see the sections with the sunlight reflecting off the face. Waves went from low tide, mean and sectiony to high tide, blasted offshore, mean and hollow. Devil winds which seem to have been blowing for two weeks straight throwing gallons of spray and multiple rainbows over the backs of the waves, and all that wind made it hard to keep moving down the line.

Had the most fun goofing off on the walls at C Street at the end of my section, spun in the pit and went on several waves pushing double overhead on the drops, steep but not impossible. Very few people out here, perhaps due to the big waves that would slump and section off down the line. But the drops and the spray made an otherwise lackluster longboard point a lot of fun for a half hour or so.
