Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  January Overview 1999 Overview

Date/Time: Tuesday, January 12th, 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm
Location: Rincon
Weather: Overcast and cool at noon, warming to mostly cloudy by midafternoon. No wind.
Conditions: Fair, some southeasterly warble and windswell influence.
Swell: Dropping W swell and building N windswell, 6-8 ft at 17 s combined readings on outer buoys.
Surf: Waist to chest high with shoulder to head high sets.
Comments: Mid-day break from a work-at-home afternoon, a quick grab of some fun Indicator and Rivermouth rides where the low tide and combined swells were making for some fun, fast and hollow peaks. Thought I had the perfect barrel ride set up on one wave. It started to bottom out and I stuck with it, looking for the coverup and then it collapsed and mushed. Nothing like pulling into a barrel only to have it not be there.

Overall though it was a pretty fun session, with the pitchiness of it making up for the sometimes small size and relative shortness of the rides. A thinning crowd helped to get a bunch of waves in a short period of time, good when on a tight schedule. Unusual for here. I like it like that.
