Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  January Overview 1999 Overview

Date/Time: Sunday, January 17th, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Location: Stables
Weather: Sunny and warm. Light southerly winds, going dead calm by midafternoon.
Conditions: Fair, seemed to be getting worse as the day went on, but see below.
Swell: Slightly weaker WNW wind and groundswells, 8-9 ft at 14 s on outer buoys.
Surf: Shoulder to head high on the sets.
Comments: Rincon and the points of northern Ventura were suffering as I drove down under a nasty SE breeze. Wasn't until I got to the fairgrounds that things looked to be cleaning up. That's where I went, despite my hopes at the start of the drive to try a surf at Pitas.

Not connecting very well for me, but the waves had some punch to them as they rolled over the rocks. Boosted a few decent floaters, back on the newer 6'6" fresh from a ding repair job.

Things really prettied up on the drive back. Saw Solimar reef looking as clean and beautiful as I've ever seen it, at least overhead and hollow. Rincon was pretty packed but also looked dreamy and glassy. Dang! I can't stop, taking the car back so Bettye can run some errands. So I smile, hoot a few times out the window as someone gets covered up inside the cove, and distract myself in Summerland with a 6-pack of Rolling Rock and some spicy turkey sausage.

Update: Monday night, a new strong WNW rumbling down the northern coastal buoys at 17-18 ft at 17 s. Hit the San Martin buoy at 7pm; it'll be here by morning. Sweet dreams...
