Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  January Overview 1999 Overview

Date/Time: Wednesday, January 20th, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Location: Rincon
Weather: Overcast, mixed high and low clouds with breezy onshores.
Conditions: Poor. Westerly lump and bump.
Swell: Fading NW groundswell, down to 10 ft at 14 s on the outer buoys.
Surf: Chest to shoulder high on the peaks, some bigger, fading fast down the line.
Comments: Late go-out, gambled and lost on the wind but got a lower tide. Quickly moved down from the rivermouth to try for some slightly higher quality cove waves. Fast and sectiony, lots of floater practice and lots more time stuck behind the whitewater.

Joel Tudor was out there, riding a fairly short singlefin, looked to be under 6' in length, with a pretty forward wide point and a pinny tail. Didn't get a real good look at his surfing, but what I saw was lots of slidy-skatey maneuvers.

New swell has already hit the day-away offshore buoys, 10 ft at 20 s on the swell side of the readings with lots of windwave activity atop it. Should be here by tomorrow afternoon.
