Santa Barbara Surf Report Archive
July 1999 Overview

A fair to poor month for surf, with only one real southern hemi swell landing in the course of the month. The rest was just occasional background pulses. This would set the tone for the rest of the summer.

One of the highlights of the month was a meeting with fellow alt.surfer Glenda Carroll; while we didn't surf we had a pretty good time watching small C Street and chatting. Surf-wise, the highlight was an excellent day at Leo Carrillo in which I got more waves than I wanted, or maybe the next day, which was less crowded with even bigger waves. Uncrowded good Cali point surf is hard to beat for stoke.

Lowlights of the month came just a day later when I pushed my luck and tore open my fingers and the deck of my board, trying to get a hat trick of perfect days at Secos. The week after that I let SurferBob drag me to the Bu for some truly flat and overcrowded waves on an utterly overhyped swell.

Out of 7 reports, got good surf 4 times. Rode the longboard 3 times and didn't get the semi-gun wet at all. Average wave height was around shoulder high.
