Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  July Overview 1999 Overview

Date/Time: Saturday, July 10th, 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Location: C Street / Backsides
Weather: Hazy morning, light southeasterlies at Rincon.
Conditions: Good. No chop but a bit of windswell lump.
Swell: Moderate southern hemi backing up yesterday's weak swell, 3 ft at 17 s swells from 185.
Surf: Not landing well at C Street. Waist to chest high, sectioning 20 yards in front of the curl. Very poor form. Backsides better with some head high stuff.
Comments: Hoped for some small southern hemi swell that I could longboard, which I got, but the windswell atop it made for lots of unmakeable sections and a generally pathetic feel to the surf. Didn't go out.

Shook hands with fellow alt.surfer Glenda, in town for a visit with her son-at-camp in Ojai. We chatted idly a bit about swimming, she being in USMS and me having alluded to a former swim career, and checked out each others boards -- she has the coolest airbrush of the classic Japanese illustration of a tsunami about to break over Mt. Fuji -- before I sent her onward to meet with another alt.surfing poster down at County Line.

Saw a wave hit Backsides on the way back up the road and pulled into the lot. Very inconsistent lefts but close to head high on the peaks. Pretty well-occupied by the crew that was out there and a longboard didn't seem to fit the wave. Traded Baja stories with one of the guys who was just back from being all over the peninsula during that run of swells in June, then headed home for a BBQ and the Cup finals.
