More consistent than yesterday and
a lot less crowded. I'd gotten out after my last session
feeling pretty surfed-out on this place, and wasn't planning
on surfing here today. But I had to. A very light crowd on
the drive-by got me coming back for a look. It almost looked
like it was closing out, but nobody was surfing it correctly.
I had to mind-surf the sections from the outside peaks where
no-one was taking off and quickly convinced myself I could
make them.
If nothing else this session proved it's possible to get uncrowded surf at a usually-packed classic SoCal point break. Already found it in April at Malibu and most recently last month at Rincon. And now here! Tide almost too low, and almost too-south a swell angle, which made it perfect. Waves hitting the third reef and only myself and one other guy on it in the right spot. On more than one occasion I'd get a wave all the way to the stairs and paddle back out only to turn around on a fresh set just as I got back outside and head back to the stairs again. Down the line it would bowl over the closeout rocks, making a great playground for floaters or bashing the lip. Being so surf-stuffed from yesterday made me feel a lot more free to try things that might blow the wave, fuller figure-8 roundhouses in the speed section, cutbacks from out the back of the wave, whatever my little heart desired. It was paradise like that for about 2 hours before the crowd came in. It remained mellow after that for another hour, and then the tide and wind and my aching muscles shut me down. Had to move in by the rock and it wasn't working for me, so I went in after finally getting a small one. As I hobbled over the rocks on the inside, a sweet 10-wave set poured over the point. I couldn't get them all today, but I got a bunch. |
