The buoys don't lie, but sometimes they make you wait
to see the truth. We headed out at 4am with 3 ft at
17 s swells pinging the buoys and shortboards atop the
car, only to find inexplicable inconsistency and flatness
at Malibu on the low tide. Everywhere else was looking
miserable, the coffee and scones from Starbucks were sub-par,
and it was starting to feel a bit like a
skunk session.
After all that dithering about, we wound up at Sequit just as the tide was beginning to push into the surfable range. This happened despite my best intentions not to surf there again, didn't want an anticlimactic session after the last two times out. But it looked to be the power spot along the coast. Maybe I could go 3 for 3? We paddled out. Only SurferBob and myself on the outside reefs for at least an hour and a half, and we traded off some fun rides. The waves were glassy but had some funky warble on them. The crowd was slow to fill in due to some CalTrans road work shutting down the on-street parking, but eventually we were sharing space with a pack of 10 or 15. I was definitely feeling the hangover from my last two surfs there, and paddled in for one more wave along the rock. That's when I missed it and got dragged across the inside shelf, holding the rails of my board. A nice cut on my finger for me and some fresh spider cracks on the rail for my 6'6". No hat-trick of surf sessions was to be had on this swell. |
