Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  June Overview 1999 Overview

Date/Time: Tuesday, June 8th, 5:30 am - 7:00 am
Location: Secos / Arroyo Sequit / Leo Carrillo
Weather: Cold. Clouds on the hills keeping the sun back at dawn.
Conditions: Clean. No noticeable windswell influence here.
Swell: Setty moderate southern hemi. 2+ ft at 17 s from 180-185.
Surf: Waist to chest high on the small stuff. Shoulder high to overhead on the drops of the sets, fading pretty quickly down the line when it didn't close out on the larger ones.
Comments: Harrowingly, untolerably cold. Buoys are reporting water temps around 60 F but it felt colder here. I'm certain I've had colder-water sessions than this but I've never been driven out of the water by it, and certainly not in June.

Introduced Toby to this spot and he quickly set to taking off deep and well behind the rock, further back than I like to sit. It was really too cold and too inconsistent to sit out on the reefs, but we did it anyway and got the best of the session. Or I did -- Toby's waves mushed out past the rock while mine held up and rolled past the lifeguard tower.

I got so cold that I started paddling around the lifeguard buoy just to stay warm during the lulls, and went in early after my numbed feet wouldn't stick to the wax on a drop. The normally cold water at the shower felt warm, and I was actually stoked to be out of the water, even so early.

Back in S.B. in time for rush hour traffic and the start of the work day. Things here looked junky with a couple guys sitting in the whitecaps at Rincon.
