Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  June Overview 1999 Overview

Date/Time: Friday, June 25th, 5:30 am - 7:00 am
Location: Searched from Secos to Malibu and back
Weather: Balmy, overcast, building southerly junk wind.
Conditions: Glassy early but worsening.
Swell: Small SSW swell, 2+ ft at 17 s from 190.
Surf: Generally waist to chest high.
Comments: Dawn patrol to Secos revealed inside waves burgering and the reef sets sectioning out. Not working on this swell, perhaps too much SE influence from Adrian, our first tropical system. Only 3 people out but it wasn't looking worthwhile on my older 6'6". I again bemoaned the loss of my longboard-stashable car.

Well, it has size. Maybe it's got better shape down the road. Zeros doing its sectiony, mushy left thing at high tide. Zuma a clean hollow unmakeable shorepound. Rounded the corner of Point Dume and began seeing a south chop that by Malibu had turned things to total junk. Smaller here, as well. Damn.

Maybe I can get something to eat. Denied trying to get pastries at the little French bakery and denied at Noah's Bagels.

Maybe I can grovel at Leo, at least it was clean and uncrowded. Drove back. There were now between 15 and 20 on it thick, mostly longboarders, and the south chop had beaten me back up the coast. I couldn't motivate earlier for glassy and uncrowded conditions and definitely wasn't going to paddle out in poor, crowded conditions. One of the three I saw earlier came in and wasn't too stoked. Shambled back to the car and drove home through the beginnings of the morning rush. I think I smelled skunk out of a few car exhaust pipes.
