Santa Barbara Surf Report Archive
June 1999 Overview

Early June put a good finishing touch onto this year's spring season to match the excellent opener to spring in March. A run of good southern hemisphere swells rolled in to open up the summer, and spring capped off a final gasp with a very good off-season pulse out of the northwest, including a double-session day (those are always to be savored).

Highlight of the month was a vision of perfection at Rincon (it's June, remember?) with very few people out in the cove, a new 9'6" Yater spoon, and flawless smooth waves tubing over the sandbars. Another excellent session at Malibu was also had this month, also on the 9'6" (see my 30 year setback story for details on how it rode those days).

Lowlight of the month was by far the day I got triple-whammied by a dinged nose off the rock at Secos, a dead car battery due to headlights left on, and a vision of nudity in the showers that still makes me squirm. Cutting a session short because I froze my ass off wasn't much fun, either.

Out of 13 reports, got good surf 8 times. Rode the longboard 3 times and the semi-gun not at all. Average wave height was around chest high.
