Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  March Overview 1999 Overview

Date/Time: Monday, March 1st, 6:30 am - 10:00 am
Location: Rincon
Weather: Faint high clouds, otherwise gorgeous. Gale warnings on the outer waters, no wind locally.
Conditions: Fair. No chop but a strong NW windswell off the channel piling up atop the groundswell and messing it up.
Swell: Moderate WNW groundswell, 11 ft at 17 s from 280-285 on the outside.
Surf: Chest high to overhead, very setty.
Comments: Not breaking like it should this morning, with the indicator totally non-functional and the rivermouth a shifty morass of big walling peaks with no shoulder. Things were a little better in the cove.

I generally kooked the entire session: missing waves, getting pitched on late takeoffs, botching the bottom turns on drops that I did make. Those in the cove that I did scratch into were solid-sized but poorly-formed rides to the freeway. Went in after one lumpy-bumpy wave that would have gone well past the riprap if I didn't straighten out early to avoid the high-tide battle with the rocks.

If the wind stays off it, things should improve with the dropping tide.
