Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  March Overview 1999 Overview

Date/Time: Saturday, March 20th, 1:45 pm - 2:15 pm
Location: Rincon
Weather: Moderate southerly winds with approaching rain from a cold front that was expected earlier and stronger.
Conditions: Good to fair, much better than expected with what I heard were classic conditions this AM.
Swell: The day before the real deal begins, 8 ft at 14 s from 295 on the outer buoys.
Surf: Waist to chest high with shoulder high sets.
Comments: One of the shortest Rincon sessions I've ever had; the only one I can think of that was shorter was when I lost my leash on my first wave and went in, lacking a replacement. This was a hell of a lot more fun, though.

Why? I was one of 20 stoked people surfing for the Isla Vista Chapter of Surfrider in the 3rd Rincon Clean Water Classic fundraising event. And the waves were great! Unfortunately, my best four rides to the freeway were non-scoring rides gotten while I was without a jersey, and the only wave I got when I did have it on was a closeout. My first time in the water with judges looking on. A rather strange feeling.
