Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  October Overview 1999 Overview

Date/Time: Monday, October 11th, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Location: Secos / Arroyo Sequit / Leo Carrillo
Weather: Overcast and dull with light to moderate westerly sideshores.
Conditions: Fair, kelp keeping conditions tolerable.
Swell: Fading southern hemi, 3 ft at 14 s.
Surf: Around shoulder high with some head high waves.
Comments: Figured on grabbing some waves on what I thought would be the last day of surf here for the season. Things didn't start off well as a bad repair job of the smashed nose on my old 6'6" squashtail cracked open when I set it down on the pavement. That, plus all the additional weight from this summer's ding repairs, led me to stop by Channel Islands and order a replacement -- MX 6'6" x 18 3/4" x 2 1/2", 5+5+5oz S-cloth, FCS fins, and the new UV-curing resin. Hopefully when it comes in I'll really be able to compare its design with my current newest board -- a 6'6" roundtail MBB4.

The waves had sub-par shape, with decent-sized takeoffs and rides past the body rock, beyond which most of them fizzled. Only got one good wave to the stairs. Sporadic sets typical for this swell and a pretty mellow crowd, most of whom I knew from around Leo or even up at Rincon. Overall it felt like "maintenance surf" after this weekend's multiple sessions in solid waves.
