Things at work were going to hell with my facility's pump
spuriously shutting itself off after running for 30 minutes.
It had run fine for a week straight before last
Friday when I, uh, shut it down to go surf that swell.
By noon it still was flaking. On, off, on off. I'd had enough and
by midafternoon I was in the water, feeling pretty stressed and the
waves just didn't seem to be working.
Almost paddled in frustrated at least twice. Watched a collision between some big guy trying to shoulder hop a wave and a young shortboarder paddling for the shoulder. The big guy tried to blame his own brother (whom he was shoulder-hopping) for his idiocy. The total carnage of 2 dinged boards and various people leaving in disgust cleared the lineup out. Just enough for the sets to start rolling in around 5:00pm, solid overhead waves reeling off the third reef and four of us left in the water taking turns and enjoying the suddenly kook-free lineup. One or two or three of those waves and I've finally forgotten about all the frustration from work and my wife having been out of town for the past 3 weeks. One or two in a row more (get a 400 yd. wave, paddle back out to the reef, the set is still pumping, spin in mid-paddle and get another...) and I'm utterly stoked. Stayed out after that, adding to the wave count, until it was dark. |
