Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  April Overview 2000 Overview

Date/Time: Wednesday, April 26th, 4:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Location: Secos / Arroyo Sequit / Leo Carrillo
Weather: Clear skies and strong but weakening westerlies.
Conditions: Good to fair, winds sideshore and manageable.
Swell: 2 ft at 17 s southern hemi with overlying windswell.
Surf: Setty, waist to chest high.
Comments: First time out in a month! Winter season hit that downward spiral of weaker and weaker surf, followed by lots of flat days until I had gotten so far away from my regular surf check routines and dawn patrol wakeup times that drastic measures were called for, just to get back into it.

After false starts all week, the midday run on this subpar southern hemi was launched. Despite lackluster buoys, it didn't look to be getting any better, and I... just... had... to... go.

Lots of time sitting in the water once I went. Talked with a few people I hadn't seen in months since my last session here. Got a few waves. Surfed them like someone who hasn't been out in a month, slow to my feet and turning tentatively. Lots of recovery work to do and hopefully I'll be back out there again soon.

Still, I almost got a couple barrels over the body rock, and some nice floaters off the inside closeouts. Kept hoping to see some outside sets amidst the little stuff but nothing ever came. Several crews of five or six guys came and went while I bobbed in the lineup and picked off a wave here and a wave there, until I had my fill -- a day's worth, but not a whole month's worth. As I watched from the showers, I smiled and made myself a promise never to take that long of a break again.
