Santa Barbara Surf Report Archive
February 2000

The Overview

An excellent month for surf, with conditions a bit off the optimal track, to be expected for February which is typically our wettest month of the year. Even during a La Nina we still get rain and southeasterly winds, and this month was no exception.

As usual, Rincon was the predominantly surfed lineup by me and often it seemed by everyone else, too. Unusually broken-up conditions predominated in the cove with the normal ruler-edged lines looking more serrated by waves bouncing off the top of the point. But the highlight was watching a big stormy day that I didn't surf, down at Campus Point.

The biggest lowlight was probably happening on about that same day I watched Campus, with the strong swell and tides combining to trigger an ignorant County Parks reaction in the dumping of tons of rocks on Goleta Beach. Another bummer was the occasional crowd hassle, to be expected in a lineup like the 'con, but particularly bad was the shove someone gave me after trying to do a post drop-in go-behind on a large rivermouth wave.

Out of 12 reports, got good surf 10 times. Rode the semi-gun twice, with the rest of my sessions on one of the two 6'6" thrusters. Average wave height was around overhead and a half, the best average ever for these surf reports.
