Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  February Overview 2000 Overview

Date/Time: Sunday, February 6th, 10:00 am - 2:30 pm
Location: Rincon
Weather: Sunny skies with scattered high clouds, no wind until midafternoon when mild westerly breezes arrived.
Conditions: Perfect glass, excellent. Still good when the wind first came up.
Swell: New WNW swell with additional WSW windswell, 11 ft combined heights at 14 s from 285 deg. on outer buoys. Very strong 9 ft at 14 s on the inner buoys.
Surf: Solid overhead to overhead and a half.
Comments: Sunday Rincon... I try so hard not to do this to myself but I can't resist. I can't stop myself! "Hi, I'm Tim and I'm addicted to Rincon..." applause, and the crowd says from the shoulder "Hi Tim!"

Why I should resist: Very heavy crowd, spent the whole day playing either the "How deep can you paddle?" game or the "How many people can I get to drop in on me?" game. The first one necessarily meant a lot of short rides, either total closeouts or being stuck behind the section off the 2nd indicator peak.

Why I can't resist: Several waves through the rivermouth. Then one all the way into the cove, with a couple of fat rivermouth bowl sections that didn't barrel me but were so nice. Then a wave the length of the whole point, from outside of where I usually sit on the indicator (remember that first game?) to past the freeway call box. Solid the whole way, with a really fun walling section atop the cove that my board just screamed across. Only had two drop-ins (bad score on the 2nd game), but there was enough room for all of us to perform, and they both kicked out pretty quickly.

I lost my Rincon Addicts Anonymous pin somewhere along the way on that last wave. Please, don't bother to return it to me...
