Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  February Overview 2000 Overview

Date/Time: Thursday, February 24th, 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Location: Campus Point
Weather: Howling southwesterly clearing winds and overcast skies.
Conditions: Victory at sea atop the point, fair to poor at Poles but excellent and glassy on the peaks in the shelter of the cliffs.
Swell: WNW wind and ground swells, combined to 12 ft at 14 s on outer buoys and 8 ft at 14 s on the inner buoys.
Surf: Waist to chest high.
Comments: Rushed SurferBob out here after seeing a shoulder-high set crackle across the top of Poles with only 3 guys out. By the time we hit the water, though, the wind had shifted to side-onshore. Things were looking grim until I got a couple waves down into the shelter of the cliffs, where the longest and cleanest sections were.

Spent the next hour or more down there, by myself, getting every clean green wall that I wanted, playing with high lines and tip rides, then paddling back up. Couldn't ever get back up to the top of the point because another set would always pop up, and after a while I was all the way down to the Engineering I building and Bren School construction. Walked back and repeated the process a few more times until the after-work crowd paddled out and I got cold. It never got as good as it looked on my first mid-afternoon check, but it was fun!
