Watched it for quite a while, both atop the Indicator, in
the Cove, and down at Little Rincon, even thinking about
bailing back up to Fernald or Hammonds or some other spot,
before finally paddling out here on my 6'6" rounded pintail.
The plan was to get a couple waves and then surf in the cove
where the ones breaking wide were going untouched.
Plans went awry right at the start, as my first wave from the very top went all the way through the cove and nearly to the freeway. Should have abandoned the plan right then and gone back up to the indicator. Instead I hung out in the cove for a while, trying to find a wave in all the washing machine action atop the cove. The wide-breaking sets weren't very catchable, and I eventually gave up and paddled back out to the indicator. Next wave had me right back inside the Cove lineup again. Okay, fine. This time I stayed on the inside. Cleaner waves in here that the surfers on the outside were missing due to the bad shape. Almost bowling, but not quite. Lots of roundhouses cutbacks. Extra long paddle back as I kept catching bonus waves as I paddled up the point. Kept that up for at least two more hours until the burn in my arms and middle back forced me in to shore down past the highway storm drain, after which I did a quick jog up the point to rest them, and then back out into the water again. Lost track of how many waves I caught. Unusual for Rincon. Not bad for a session that didn't really go according to plan. Heard later from Toby, who did the same check of the Indicator, Cove, and Little Rincon an hour or more before I did, that Hammonds was excellent and glassy. |
