Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  July Overview 2000 Overview

Date/Time: Saturday, July 15th, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Location: C Street
Weather: Mild with a little marine layer and a little westerly breeze.
Conditions: Fair.
Swell: Small southern hemi, 2 ft at 17 s.
Surf: Very inconsistent, waist high at its best.
Comments: Another sub-par southern hemi trickling into town. Rather than hassle with the crowds, expectations, and aggressiveness coming off a long flat spell I decided to load Betts, her friend, her friend's husband, and their 3 kids into the car and do a massive surf school day. A rented blue foam board from the Beach Hut, my 9'6" Yater, and a couple really old Morey Boogieboards, a 138 and a 142, rounded out the equipment choices.

I spent the day riding leash-free on my 9'6" and alternating between giving tips and encouragement to the foam board riders and picking off the occasional little peeler. A medium-low tide was running, making the inconsistent sets fast but makeable through the inside. The kids hung out in the shorebreak by the pier on their sponges, and I occasionally got a wave through to near where they were. Even some short noserides.

A fun day of surf, if you had the right perspective. I've been out so seldom of late that my perspective was very positive, despite how out of shape I am. Haven't been this sore after a longboard session in weak surf, ever.
