Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  March Overview 2000 Overview

Date/Time: Friday, March 3rd, 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm (updated)
Location: Rincon
Weather: Thunderstorms and rain, no wind.
Conditions: Evening glass-off.
Swell: Peaking NW swell, 15 ft at 17 s from 295+ deg. on outer buoys, 7 ft at 17 s on inner buoys.
Surf: Chest to head high.
Comments: Light crowd, swell thought to be on the rise with the 'real deal' coming on Saturday. Didn't happen, as the 20'+ buoys never got past the Golden Gate, let alone Pt. Conception. Good thing I surfed it when I did!

Clean forest-green water with overhead rumbles of thunder and occasional lightning flashes. Bursts of big drops of rain and occasional downpours. Glassy conditions but sectiony waves not rideable very far from the top of the Indicator. Best wave was the only one I got in to the rivermouth, other than that it was just milking the cutbacks and trying to get creative with the closeout dump.

Just me and one other guy atop the point for quite a while until the after-work crew came out. Then it wasn't so much fun, but I stayed out until I got that one wave through to the rivermouth.

Sunday Update: Gales on the channel and strong winds locally, hard out of the west and bitter cold. Snow on the mountains. Saw some rideable chest to head high waves at various sheltered spots, but damn was it cold! I totally wimped out, and stayed indoors.
