After surfing here for the past two days in a row, my
intentions were to head on to Ventura for bigger waves.
Watched the Cove for a long time and debated whether it'd
really be cleaner down south, the wind was coming out of
the east which made me hopeful for offshores, but I still
had my doubts. After about a half hour of kicking driftwood
around the point, decided to paddle out and sit on a section
in the cove that was rarely being beaten, just to get wet.
Got a couple waist high waves from that section, nothing really good, a lot of time jockeying for position and spinning quickly to grab the missed sections. Then surprisingly, it got a lot better. I hate to sound like one of those people who always credits or blames the tide for things, but when the tide started dropping, dammed if it didn't get good, really good! I was stoked! With the lousy looking conditions all morning, there weren't many people out on it, and for a couple of hours it was starting to look a bit like Saturday's super-fun tube session, without the crowds and minus a little bit of the size. Of course, the crowd did eventually fill in. Went in early because of that very factor. Second or third set wave in a row from atop the cove for me, just after doing the rock dance to get back out, had a couple of drop-ins. While getting around them I had to take a high line through a pretty steep section, and a third guy bailed his board right in front of me. There was a 'clunk' sound as I stayed high and floated across the lip, but I couldn't find any board damage after I finished off the wave down by the call box. Feeling like I'd dodged a bullet, with more people paddling out by the minute, I decided to head home. |
