Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

  May Overview 2000 Overview

Date/Time: Monday, May 15th, 7:00 am - 10:00 am
Location: Secos / Arroyo Sequit / Leo Carrillo
Weather: Exotic off-season storm weather with bands of clouds of all kinds and elevations moving across the sky in groups. Gorgeous morning.
Conditions: Glass. Wind again came up just after I got out.
Swell: Slowly fading S groundswell, 3 ft at 17s from 200 deg. Also a west swell coming off the storm at 7 ft, 11 s from 280 in the afternoon.
Surf: Setty, chest high to overhead.
Comments: Late start today anticipating the possibility of some off-season waves at Rincon or other winter spots. After first light, the checks revealed surf around waist high. Cobbles was the high point along the road, beachbreaky A-frame peaks with nobody out and a mini-van pulled off illegally to the side of the freeway, checking what usually looks worthless. I had to go in to LAX to change a ticket anyway, so I moved on south.

Glad I did. Sets to overhead and a half were rumbling across the reefs when I pulled in, and the crowd was light. Everyone surfed out or too cold? In either case, it was great. After the last two sessions in which I had a little bit of a frustrating time grabbing the set waves, got more than my share. You get good and bad days in the water, and this was a good one.

For all the waves I got, though, I left the session with a bit of a sense of ennui. Either the wave was uncharacteristically mushy today or my tastes have evolved for hollower, more critical surf. May have to branch out to other spots for some variety this summer.

Did a dumb thing when leaving the shower today, rinsed off my board and then cracked the nose right on the corner of the stall, taking a little chip out, just enough to expose foam. No big deal, the board was already dry, I could just patch it later, having already surfed.

The drive back north revealed a different answer. Surf was up! Sets around head high were all over the points from C Street to Rincon, and me with this damn stupid ding in my board. What a bittersweet moment.
