Santa Barbara Area Surf Report

Date/Time:   Tuesday, November 21st, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Location:   Rincon

Weather:   Mild, mostly cloudy, gorgeous dayglo sunset.

Conditions:   Windswelly and messy.

Swell:   Continued pulses of NW ground swell, 8-9 ft at 20 s from 300 deg. on the outer buoys. Around 4 ft at 20 s on the inside.

Surf:   Chest to head high drops with fast-fading shoulders. Smaller in the cove but holding size down the line.

Comments:   The rush to get into the water before dark took on greater urgency as I plowed into the traffic jam along the 101 at Garden and Milpas, workaday commuters getting an early start home and messing up the timing of my session, or just too many people in this growing town. Hit the water at Rincon and it seemed like too many of those people were surfers. It's early in the season and things will get better into January once the holiday crowds dissipate and people start getting surfed out, but for now, the Thanksgiving feeding frenzy begins early and at a frantic pace.

Sloppy waves atop the point, typical windswelly waves breaking quite wide and then mushing out. The rivermouth was better, punchier, and I got some good steep walls.

Somehow the cove was still close to perfect. Not as much of the wind waves making it inside and the crowd while thick wasn't as insane as I heard it was earlier. Bumped into fellow alt.surfing poster John Singer after recognizing him from the description he gave me over the phone. Don't think I ever saw him get a wave, as I went in after getting only a few. Could have sworn I saw Kelly Slater out there as well. Lots of guys were ripping but he, of course, made us all look like we sucked.
