Comments:   Yesterday was my last chance to trunk it; today I figured was my last chance to dawn patrol a summer swell. Thought I'd learned my lesson in properly preparing for cold water and put the springsuit back on, but it was still freezing! Painful when my arms hit the water. Good thing the sun was out.

Seemed less consistent today; the tide was holding steady in the 2'-3' range but waves out on the reefs were just about as rare as the previous day with two feet more water over the lineups. The lack of a crowd (3 of us) made up for it.

Single to two-wave sets on the outside every 12-15 minutes, with one or two freak sets that went 5 or 6 waves long. Managed to get a couple of waves out of those, and it wasn't until the best of those sets that I finally got one with a powerful shoulder. Most of the rest of them were fun drops but disappeared down the line after only 50 yards or so.

This being my only predawn patrol of the summer, I was bummed to find that I couldn't park in the lot and had to stay up by the road, something I haven't done since three years ago when I saw two wrecks along PCH that smashed up parked cars in the course of just one week. Fortunately, no damage was done today, and I got to say a few encouraging words to some people checking it out from the stairs who were worried about being able to deal with "all the longboarders."
