| Comments: | So, i bought a new classic longboard in order to continue to develop my global surfing plan. The idea was instead of having a "performance" longboard, i would use an old style one. Thus, when i wanted to "performance" surf i'd use the shortboard and if i wanted to work on style and soul i'd use this board. The board in question is a 9'2" 1960's Velzy Pig that I bought on Ebay recently. It's not entirely original, the seller had restored it a bit and used some blue pigmented resin. Apparently also the fin has been hacked up a bit from it's original form. So I wanted to try this bad boy out right away so I headed to Coal Oil with Kristi. We knew the tide was a bit high but the weather was excellent and perhaps we'd beat the lunch rush so we went. Lugging the 30lb board down the stairs and to the block house was a bit of chore but it built character. What built even more character was not using a leash. There were only a few other folks out there, but they all knew each other and took advantage of the fact i was flailing on this new board by reverse snaking me. I can't think of any other term for it, but when you are the only one out there cause everyone else caught one, and then guys come and paddle past you a few yards and claim priority on the next wave. That just ain't cool in my book So the board rode all right. The Pig shape is basically a backwards template. So it looks like the fin is on the wrong end. This means that the board trims well but is tough to get to the nose on. I may seek a different board, but i figured i'd give this guy a month or so to get wired. The water was uber-clear and you could watch the fish swimming under you. The tide was such that the waves were pitching out over "the ledge" and i saw one guy get covered up twice on two separate take-offs. hooting for him did not help. I still got snaked. I've never had my session ruined by such small crowds. I've gotten bad vibes at places with 50 people out, but never when there were only 4 other folks out. On a positive note the water and weather was warm, the sea life was out in full effect, and i was living in a democracy. | ||
