Comments:
Was visiting friends down in Santa Monica so I figured I'd give myself some extra time and surf along the way. The weather in SB was depressing, a low fog that seemed more menacing then June Gloom. Driving south Rincon looked anything but fun; small, crowded, and mushy as all get out. La Conchita looked surprisingly clean and good sized, but with it's typical close-out self. Driving along the PCH was just as bad, all the little spots I like to frequent were mirrors of Rincon. Surprisingly, the Overhead was breaking because the tide was so low. A few guys were on it, but I had my shortboard and too often have had un-impressive results getting good rides in so-so Overhead conditions because of the quick fade out.

My only hope then was for something down towards Malibu. Without hesitation I stoped at County Line and the first thing I saw was a head high/bit overhead wave that was clean and cranking. I was shocked. It was mostly sunny, super warm, and it was head high. I rushed back to the ride and suited up, and headed out there. As often happens with me, I had seen the set, and in between the sets was anything but epic; typically some thigh to waist high waves breaking on the cobblestones. The sets were really great though, although they only delivered 1 wave per set. Kinda frustrating to wait 10 minutes and get jockeyed out of position. I believe I only caught 5 or 6 waves in my time out there, and only 1 of those was one of the head high set waves. I should have brought the longboard. The waves broke later then you thought and lacked the power that they appeared to have.

The conditions were really clean, especially compared to up north. The vibe was pretty good out there too. I remember as a high schooler heading down to County Line and being completely scared of the big LA dudes in their dayglow wetsuits. I didn't see any of that action, and had a pretty good time. After this session I realized I could have just driven by every other spot along the way in between the sets and maybe they were actually good. That in mind, driving further south I saw some flat conditions at Sequit and Malibu, but what appeared to be good waves down below the cliffs on some of the more difficult to check out spots. That's my Saturday surf adventure.
