Comments:
This am was supposed to be my first surf session with an SBS reader. Burke had been reading the site and emailing for some time even though he lives up in the Santa Cruz area. I told him I'd be up there for a wedding and we planned to get a session or two together at some of his local haunts. K-dog had showed me where Pleasure Point was, and since I had no Santa Cruz knowledge I told Burke I'd call him when we got there. We showed up at what we thought to be pleasure point and it looked pretty small and crowded, yet clean. I had to get wet so called Burke and he agreed to drive up from La Selva and meet me in the water. I donned the full suit for the first time in months and paddled out.
I surfed and surfed on pretty small waves for two hours. The lulls were long and the crowds were huge so I kept catching little knee and thigh high waves to ammuse myself. I caught a few of the set waves, but only about the waist high ones, which typically were closing out quick. Some of the chest high waves would make it from the far outside and these were occupied by several surfers who had waited half an hour for there chance at glory. Sandwiched between a surf school on my left and hardened santa cruz locals on my right I was left picking up scraps for most of the morning.
The water was cool and refreshing, the people seemed friendly, and I caught enough small waves to make me content, but Burke never came out. After about two hours I was ready to go in and I saw K-dog on the rocks. On her run she had come across the "real" pleasure point, which was the group of surfers about half mile up the coast I had seen. I had thought the waves looked much better up there, and I'm sure Burke was out there somewhere. We drove on up there and I was ready to keep surfing there but there was a billion people out and my chances of coming across a guy I'd never met looked pretty slim. The waves were head high at times and way better shape and I was kicking myself for having missed my big opportunity.
I left Burke a message on his phone apologizing and was ready for my chance at waves on Saturday....
