Comments:
Armed with the knowledge of where the true Pleasure Point was, I was ready to meet Burke at 8:30 at the top of the steps with the artwork dedicated to Jay Moriarity. I was suited and ready and watching one of the infrequent sets roll in across "1st Point" when Burke showed up. Burke, a 50ish guy riding his triple stringer 9'6" Pearson Arrow, would procede to show me the ins and outs of Pleasure Point on a crowded mid-morning saturday session in a solid south swell.
We paddled out at the steps, with 38th street to our left, and beyond that the dismall begginners spot "The Hook" that I had been riding yesterday. Burke explained to me he probably hadn't ridden that place since high school. Which may explain why I was riding waist high waves at the Hook while he was in Head High stuff up at Pleasure Point. Up to our right was 1st and 2nd peak and beyond that "Sewers". Sewers was roughly equivalent to the faster waves at the Indicator while 2nd peak being equivalent to the Cove at Rincon. 1st Peak would sometimes connect thru past 2nd, but most of the time shut down, leaving it a gamble at either an epic backdoored takeoff or a short ride.
The crowd was at least 50 strong, and the division between those squatting on 1st and 2nd peaks was tough to figure out. We started on the flanks of 2nd peak, both picking off a few nice waist high waves every now and again. Burke told me I had free reign on dropping in on him but I was shy about taking him up on it, so only did it once, when I was sure he'd get shut down. We continued hanging out in and around the 2nd peak, catching some smaller sets every now and then and swinging around on the paddle out to catch some small stragglers. I had one of the best waves of my month on a waist high one that went forever, and was glassy and smoothed by the kelp. It kept giving and giving, no dead spots or sections too tough to make, just a perfect longboardable peeler that headed towards the stairs.
At some point we found ourselves on the outside of the 1st peak. There was a small left there, but it was tough to figure out if the guy on your inside was going left or right, so I only pulled one or two of those off, and they were short rides. At about this time, emmersed in the sea of surfers at 1st point, I started to lose my mo' and got my rythem thrown off by the lack of waves to catch. Chased a few small ones in desperation and started heading towards 2nd peak. I had to be back to get ready for the wedding by 11:00 so my drop dead out of the water time was 10:30. I told Burke if I got a good one I may not paddle back out, and I managed to catch a small one all the way in and headed outta there, without ever giving the Burkester a proper thank you and goodbye...so thanks dog!
