| Comments: | A two session day and one of my best surfing days all year as far as my personal "performance" whatever that means. Woke up in the pre-dawn hours and tried to beat the rising tide. The sets could be really fun and good sized but the in between waves were much smaller. Caught a bunch of fun ones and was having a great time. Good group of guys out there and a good vibe. Since i Longboard and Shortboard i pay attention to the vibe between the two groups on whichever vehicile i'm on. I was shortboarding today as was everybody out there and everyone got along. Then a guy came out, trunking it on a big yellow longboard. Paddled out past everybody and spun around on the first set wave. Took off in front of two guys, nearly impaled me and kept going. A whirlwind introduction. Everyone in the water was wide eyed and amazed at the peace that had been interupted. The p.m. session along the Gaviota Coast was excellent. A bunch of people out when i first got out and had one of my best big waves sessions in awhile. I was making drops and getting tucked in and in general in charge of my board and my body which is a little unusual for me. Soon the crowd thinned and I was the only one out there. This had adverse affects on my surfing and I stopped dropping in on the big closeouts that were rag-dolling me. I've never been thru the rinse cycle so bad as today. Limbs in all directions, upside down, sometimes hitting bottom, it was a miracle I was ok. After a half hour of it being just me a couple of guys came out to keep me company and I got more confident again but no one took off on the big sets. We'd just turn around and see the carnage and exchanged glances as if to say, "umm...yeah that thing closed out...no way i could have pulled it off". Unfortunately today was the day that Steve Issaris had a heart attack at coal oil point. Jon and Bill were some of the first surfers on the scene, and I know being involved in something so traumatic is terribly unsettling. Let's all be good to each other out there, ya here. | ||
