Crashed at Justin's on Friday night and we woke at 6:30 to hit his little local spot in Pacific Beach. Conditions did not look good, a bunch of mushy waves and already crowded. So Justin steered us towards a much more crowded yet much better shaped Scripps Pier in La Jolla. The shape here was much better, plenty of form and power, yet a real quirky wave to get wired at first.

We started out up north near the pier at a nicely shaped left that would come in every now and then. The density of surfers was growing and growing, it was obvious the waves could not support this many people. Sitting outside and about to drop in, you'd see about 10 people scrambling on the inside, some of them getting out of your way, and some of them trying to drop in on you. Caught a few rights down here that were zippy and fun, but we weren't catching much.

We let ourselves drift through the main pack and down south a bit further. Here we were on the outskirts of the back and had a peak to share with about only a dozen people. This was much better and our wave count started to rise. We were right on the edge of a nasty rip current, so you really had to work hard at staying where you wanted to be. A few head high ones would come in outside and catch us off gaurd and then it would be ten minutes of meager waves. This place reminded me a bit of Pismo in that the angle of the beach was so small that paddling out you would run into a line of whitewater. We were really far out but not in that deep of water.

After about 2 hours of this Justin caught the wave of the day and refused to paddle back out. He had a nice late takeoff backside right and it was big enough to lose site of him the whole time. Seeing that he wasn't making it back out again, I waited for a similiar wave to take me home, but had to settle for a some crud in.

A pod of dolphins swam thru our peak at one point. A few surfers were so startled they started to paddle in and away from flipper and his friends. Kinda humorous. After this session it was coffee and Tapotia laden breakfast burrittos and some beach crusing thru the PB Block Party.
