"Life is tough in North America" was my grandma's old saying whenever us yappy little tikes complained about something. Sitting at work at 6:00 deciding if I should go find waves, watch the lunar eclipse, watch the Laker game, or go see the Matrix, I realized our life is pretty good here in the 1st world. Being the capitalist that I am I tried to squeeze two into one by surfing and waiting for the eclipse.

I didn't want anything to do with driving around and looking for waves so I went to the absolute closest beach to my work, which is Coal Oil Point. Factor in the walk out to Sands and it's not such a close spot, but the good thing was I couldn't see the waves so I had to just commit and suit up. Had I seen the waves, I probably would not have gone out.

As I wiggled thru the fence and saw the waves for the first time, it was prettty disapointing, but I just needed to get wet and look for the moon. I headed out into the thick of the main pack, which was at least 20 strong. Before I could even sit up on my board I caught a fun little left. Alright, this could actually be a fun session if I keep my hopes down. I caught quite a few lefts and rights in this main pack until I started heading a bit up coast. This little spot to the right of the main pack I've noticed is not as consistent as the main peak but has some fun lefts and sometimes the larger sets break over here instead of the main peak. I was a backside machine catching more waves than i expected. Had some nice rail grabs looking into the sunset and a cutback or two. Also had two back to back faceplants. It felt good to get a little tossed around out there. An older bearded longboard I've seen a lot around the corner at Deveraux was out there, outside of the main pack on his green board. He had some serious style in the midst of a sea of student shortboarders.

Heard a a couple of students talking about their post-session plans;
Guy 1: "Dude, where do you wanna go tonight?"
Guy 2: "Dude, let's go to Chili's"
Guy 1: "Yeah it's gonna be crowded we should go early"
Guy 1: "Yeah, it's going to be going off"
Back in my day, if we wanted to go find some nitelife, we didn't head to the nearest Cookie Cutter piece of crap strip mall restraunt, we headed to some run down, multiple code violations place run my some enterprising immigrants eager for you to enjoy yourselves. The death of small business in America. You'd think college would be the cutting edge for seaking out places your parents DON'T go to, but with advent of the video game playing generation Y, I think they've all bought into a world of sterile Chili's and Applebee's.

Back to the moon. The sun was almost down and I still couldnt' see the moon, or an eclipsed moon. Some guy asked for the time, I had no watch but guessed 7:30 based on the sun, then let him know about the lunar eclipse. I think he was confused or stoned cause he kinda laughed and kept looking at the sun. It was about this point where I fell into a serious lull of not catching waves. I was getting a bit chilled and the waves had passed thier prime. I caught one in and headed for the moon. I didn't see it on my whole walk back to the car not my drive downtown. It wasn't until about 8:30 or so that Kevin pointed out the lunar eclipse outside of Sojurners. It was pretty epic, just a sliver of the moon and the rest looked like it was behind some wax paper. Being the full moon and all their were fire trucks and ambulances running around all evening. The lakers lost.
