Comments:

The heat in the Ventura hillsides where my folks live was unbearable. Upper 80's in the shade. Smoke in the lungs, ash all around, fallout from the Val Verde fire burning 80,000 acres over South Mountain between Simi and Moorpark. We retreated to the beach in hopes of offshore winds, holding up perfect barrells from a South Swell. Check a Rivermouth I surfed in high school all the time but it was junky so we headed to Oxnard. It wasn't offshore and the waves were big at times but mosty crumbly and closing out.

This however was better then getting ashes rubbed into your sweating hair, so I headed out. It was me and two longboarders sharing some shifty peaks. Some waves would hit the bar, jack up and race down the line. I often couldn't get up in time to make the first section. Others would apear to jack up, but then let off and fizzle out. The sandbar was shallow but just inside of that I couldn't touch. Wish I had a sandbar like that near my house. Don't know if I caught it on the wrong tide or what, but a sub-par session. Was a surf contest just south of there, could hear the PA but not see what was going on.
