Best Surfs of 1999

  1. Tavarua:
We went to Tavarua in February and scored consistent, fun Cloudbreak all but one day. The best day was a sunny afternoon with overhead sets. It was great to drop in and set up for the barrel, knowing that it was cold and flat back home in Orange County.

  2. Jocko's:
In March I made a one day excursion to the North Shore of Oahu during a ten day visit to the Big Island. We paddled out at a reef just west of Waimea Bay, which was fun and a couple feet overhead. After an hour we decided to head for a nearby left that offers 100 yard rides on the 6'-10' swell(Hawaiian scale). The wind was hard sideshore, which gave us an empty lineup, but the wave faces were pretty clean. It was awesome to drop into Hawaiian power on an 8' gun borrowed from local 40 year old charger, Greg Quinn. I saw a big set on the Horizon, and told my fellow visiting Californian, Mike, "here comes some mack-daddies!". I caught the first one to get inside towards the channel, because the 10' sets were closing out across the channel outside. When I paddled back out Quinn and my brother were laughing, because they took the entire set on the head at the deep take off lineup, while Mike paddled out to sea and ended up a 1/4 mile west at Lanikea, carried by the strong current and his overzealousness to get outside of the set. (Just got back from a week at this spot, and got a couple great days of 4'-8' with 10' sets and offshore wind-Best of 2000 session candidate!)

  3. Tahiti:
In September, I went to Moorea with the Dode and had to wait out a few days of huge swell and gnarly wind. We took the ferry over to a left reef back on Tahiti near Teahupoo, but I broke my board after one wave. Those were some very good overhead barrels. Two days later back on Moorea, we caught a motorized outrigger out to the reef and scored double overhead+ lefts. My new 7' 4" was just the ticket to get into the set waves and ride them all the way in to the channel. No barrels after the jacking takeoff, but the waves were fast and offered a good fifty yard ride.
