Best Surfs of 1999

  1. Xmas Day
Ocean Beach, S.F., CA. spot: stretch of beach from VFW's to Kelly's Cove. Glassy grinding waves well overhead to double overhead on the drops. Got a few, got worked on a few, but I was stoked anyway. Home spot comes through again!

  2. Hurricane Cindy and Hurricane Dennis swells. late August.
Warm, fun surf in Hatteras. Glassy, occasionally long zippy rights at S-turns and fun fat longboard peaks in Nags Head. Shoulder high to overhead range. Spent the whole weekend there and surfed myself silly. Got out just before Dennis hit (the first time).

  3. Hurricane Gert swell, 1st St. VA Beach.
1st St reminded me of a mini-Lower Trestles. Glassy long two way peaks. Shoulder high + range. Very crowded but very fun. Kept surfing almost the whole day. Moved to Croatan later, but still fun.
Honorable mentions:

Early June session in Hatteras. Timed wind-switch just right to catch super fun glassy shoulder to head high peaks (mostly rights) with just two friends. Down the beach was a scene with photog-pimps shooting their whores on another peak. Almost made a long section floater on a 7'8" hybrid. Pulled into closeout barrel after closeout barrel.

A nice glassy session in Frisco, just west of the Pier. Mostly closed out but waist high to occassionally bigger. Caught one of my best waves of the year on this session. A long left that kept threatening to close out, but didn't. Rode it all the way down the beach and got tubed for a good portion of it.

Solo session in Hatteras. Glassy and dumping, waist to occasionally head high. Random pull out off road and walked across briar patches to the beach. Pretty day with sunny blue skies. No one around. Fun, soulful session.
