Best Surfs of 1999
by Will Borgeson
  1. January 1, 1999, Rincon.
If memory serves, I mostly rode the Indicator that day, and had just a fantastic time - barrels into the creek on the beater longboard. Hot & glassy beach weather. Small, friendly, non-snakey crowd.

  2. December 26, 1999, a mysto left reef somewhere between the Golden Gate and Eureka. Indo-like quality...8-10' glassy juicy humps, sometimes spitting out both ends. Never a wipeout. Went in on a macker almost too big to make the drop, then a liplock, then carve carve carve backside all the way in. Used the 7'10" fungun. Probably my very best sesh of the year, and no doubt the most beautiful surf I've seen "live" in many years, maybe ever.

  3. December 28, 1999, a right reef somewhere in the same general neck o' the woods. Same swell, dropped slightly to 6-8' faces. Rode the fungun for a while, but was having difficulty getting many waves as it was a bit shifty; switched out to the beater 8'6" August singlefin longboard, and was really glad I did. This session took this board to its absolute max - this spot pushes much, much harder than, say, Rincon at the same size. Very challenging drops, carveable faces, and several standup tubes - got piped twice on one wave and made it out. Another hot glassy juicy winter day in N. Cal. While on the fungun earlier, I was too deep for this one wave and had to bail - hit the water so hard that I bruised some ribs! So, as I'm still quite sore, that just might have been my last session of 1999.
All in all, it's been a great year! I wish you all, this and more in 2000!
