The Surfrat Diaries -- Prologue

The following was posted on Usenet in the early 1990's.

Obawabje told alt.surfing:
A number of people have written me complaining that when I made my original statement regarding the negative impact that surfing has upon the environment I did not give any references or statistical evidence to back my claim.

Dr William Shatner, from the National Insitute for Environmental Research, in a speech addressed to the Council of Churches meeting recently held in the United States, stated the following:

"There can be no greater threat to the stability of the environment than the 'sport' of surfing, a pastime that has been responsible for the deaths of 2,000 million seagulls, and the dumping of over 300 million tonnes of waste in Australian waters each year."
Peter Clarke, the noted environmental chemist has been quoted as saying:
"Surfers are irresponsible, reckless youths who have destroyed our allready fragile waters. They engage in activities that can only be described as dubious, with a range of pastimes from pedophilia to the making of snuff movies."
There? Enough said..
